The Brain is a Neurobiological Organ

In the first resource, we explored a simple but important idea: behaviour is what we can observe, but it is not the whole story.
Behind every action is a living, developing person.
At the centre of that development is the brain. But the brain should not be thought of as a computer sitting separately inside the head, issuing instructions to the rest of the body. It is a living biological organ, connected continuously with the body and developing within relationships, experiences and environments.
Like every other organ, the brain has a biological history. It develops over time. It uses energy. It receives information from inside and outside the body. Its development is influenced by inherited biology and by experience.
This does not mean that biology determines a child's future. Nor does it mean that we can look at a behaviour and identify what is happening in a particular part of the brain.
It means that when we try to understand behaviour, we are trying to understand something produced by a living and developing biological system.
The Brain Is Part of the Living Body
It can be useful to talk about the brain when discussing behaviour, learning and development. But separating the brain too much from the rest of the body can create a misleading picture.
The brain is part of the body.
It receives information from the senses and from within the body. It participates in the regulation of movement, attention, memory, emotion and many other processes. At the same time, what happens throughout the body can influence what is available to the brain.
Sleep, hunger, illness, pain, physical activity, sensory conditions and many other bodily experiences can form part of the context in which behaviour occurs.
This does not mean that one of these factors explains a particular behaviour. It means that behaviour does not emerge from a brain operating in isolation.
The child we see in front of us is an integrated person, not a brain separated from a body.
A Brain Develops Over Time
A child's brain is not simply a smaller version of an adult brain.
Development takes time.
Different abilities and systems develop along different pathways and at different rates. Development also varies between children. Two children of the same age may differ considerably in attention, language, movement, emotional regulation, planning, sensory experience or social understanding.
Variation does not automatically tell us that something is wrong.
Neither does knowing a child's age tell us precisely what they should be capable of in every situation.
Development provides context. When adults understand that the brain is still developing, behaviour can be viewed differently. A child who finds something difficult may not simply need to "try harder." Equally, difficulty does not automatically establish a particular biological explanation.
We still need to understand the individual child and the situation in which the behaviour occurs.
Genes Are Part of the Story, Not the Whole Story
Every child's development has a biological inheritance.
Genes contribute to the development of the brain and body, but genes are not a detailed instruction sheet specifying exactly how a child will think, feel or behave.
Development emerges through complex interactions involving biology, development and experience over time.
This distinction matters particularly when discussing neurodiversity.
Knowing that aspects of development have a biological or genetic contribution does not allow us to predict an individual child's behaviour from a diagnosis, genetic finding or group-level research result. Children with the same diagnosis can have very different abilities, difficulties, personalities, preferences and developmental experiences.
Biology matters.
But biology is not destiny.
Experience, Relationships and Environment Matter
The developing brain is responsive to experience.
Learning itself depends upon biological change. Repeated experiences can contribute to the strengthening, modification and organisation of developing neural systems. This capacity for change is often described using the term neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is important, but it can easily be overstated.
It does not mean that every experience permanently "rewires" a child's brain. It does not mean that parents can engineer a particular developmental outcome if they provide the right experiences. And it certainly does not mean that developmental difficulties are evidence that adults have failed to provide the correct environment.
Children develop within relationships and environments, and these contexts matter. Supportive interactions, opportunities to learn, predictable routines and environments that fit a child's needs can contribute to development.
But influence is not the same as control.
Parents and carers are important parts of a child's developmental environment. They are not the sole architects of the child's development.
Development Is Not a Simple Cause-and-Effect Process
It is tempting to imagine development as a straight line.
A particular experience happens, a particular brain change follows, and a particular behaviour appears.
Human development is much more complicated.
Biology can influence how a child experiences an environment. Experience can influence development. Development changes what a child can notice, understand and do. Relationships can alter the opportunities and support available to the child. The child's behaviour can, in turn, influence how other people respond.
These processes interact over time.
This is why we should be cautious about statements such as "this behaviour is caused by the amygdala," "their brain is wired this way," or "this experience rewired their brain."
Such statements may sound scientific while giving more certainty than the evidence allows.
Brain science can help us understand important principles of development. It usually cannot tell us the complete biological explanation for one child's behaviour in one particular moment.
Why This Matters When We Think About Behaviour
Thinking about the brain as a developing biological organ changes the questions we ask.
Instead of asking only:
“Why won't this child do this?”
we might also ask:
“What abilities does this situation require from the child?”
A situation that appears simple to an adult may involve many processes for a child: understanding language, remembering instructions, managing competing sensory information, shifting attention, controlling movement, tolerating uncertainty, waiting, planning or responding socially.
That does not tell us why a particular child behaved in a particular way.
It gives us a broader place from which to begin thinking.
Understanding development does not remove expectations, boundaries or responsibility. It helps adults consider whether expectations and support are appropriate for the developing child in front of them.
A Short Reflection for Parents
Think of a recent situation in which your child found something difficult.
You might ask:
- What was I asking my child to do?
- What abilities might that situation have required?
- Was I assuming that because the task looked simple to me, it should also have been simple for my child?
- What did I actually observe, rather than what did I assume was happening inside their brain?
- What information might I still be missing?
These questions are prompts for reflection, not an assessment tool.
They cannot identify a child's brain state, determine the cause of behaviour or establish what intervention an individual child needs.
