Principle 12 of 12

Difference is Not Deficit

Support what matters without making sameness the goal.

Understanding the principle

Human beings develop, communicate, learn, move, regulate, perceive and interact in different ways. Difference should not automatically be treated as something to be corrected. Neurobiological Architects recognises human neurodevelopmental diversity while also recognising that neurodiversity and disability can coexist, and that genuine difficulty deserves genuine support.

Difference is not the same as difficulty, and looking more typical is not the same as doing better. A behaviour should not become an intervention target simply because it is unusual. The ethical test is whether an intervention will increase safety, communication, participation, autonomy, development or wellbeing, or whether it mainly makes the child appear more typical. Communication matters more than speech, independence does not mean doing everything alone, and dignity never depends on ability.

In practice, a child who moves while listening may be listening better because they are moving. We address behaviour that causes harm, and we hold high expectations alongside acceptance. Strengths are valued without becoming yet another demand. The aim is not to make every child the same, but to help each person build a life that fits them.

Key message

Different does not automatically mean deficient.
